Can I Fire My Real Estate Agent?
July 15th, 2008 Categories: Selling
Have you ever had a real estate agent you wanted to fire?
Sometimes it just happens that way. Maybe you chose a friend rather than a professional. Maybe you went with a company that said they would do LOTS of marketing for almost no fee. (Sure they will….) Maybe the agent you hired decided to get another job and didn’t bother to let you know – who knows… maybe you just made a bad choice and you need to make a change.
So my answer to the question of “Can I Fire My Real Estate Agent?” – Maybe – Probably.
You have the right to expect the service that was promised to you at the time you entered into the agreement. Have you expresed your frustration to the agent? Have you given the agent a specific list of things that you were promised but are not receiving? If you are working with a real estate firm with a Sales Manager rather than a small independent, you can go to the Sales Manager and ask for another agent which may fix the problem immediately.
Another thing to think about for the future is that Century 21 agents and offices use a Seller’s Service Pledge and a Buyer’s Service Pledge which guarantee you great service or you will be released from your contract! We actually put it all in writing! If you are interviewing agents for the job be sure to ask them for THEIR GUARANTEE!
Real estate firms have buyer contracts and seller listing agreeement but I only know of Century 21 putting the agent’s responsibilities in writing for buyers and sellers to see. It is easy to see how buyers and sellers are “tied” to the agent through the written agreement but I think holding both parties responsible is an important part of the buying and selling process too. Ask to see the GUARANTEE!
