Flood Plain Maps Brazos County

fema flood plain maps    Sometimes, when a hurricane or tropical storm is big enough, some cities and areas have to evacuate their homes and find shelter elsewhere. Evacuation is an intimidating task, having to pack everything necessary for the family to survive in such a short amount of time is never easy.

Luckily, Bryan/College Station is far enough inland that storms and hurricanes don’t usually force us to evacuate. However, Bryan/College Station is in a perfect position to accommodate people who do have to evacuate– it’s far enough inland, making it safe, but it’s also not too Read the rest of this entry »

First Fridays

historic downtown    Having a sense of community is a really healthy experience. If it’s getting to know a neighbor, or even meeting neighbors you didn’t know existed, it’s comforting to know there are tons friendly, loving people within earshot. Often times we’re so concerned with our families and our own issues, which is hardly a fault, but some people are more social than they contain in their own houses. For all social butterflies, Downtown Bryan supports the sense of community by having monthly First Fridays.

On the first Friday of every month, the city of Bryan becomes more open and festive. Restaurants stay open later and musicians set up on the street curbs, serenading strangers– once a month the city reveals its neighborly culture.

Regardless of what type of person you are, outgoing or Read the rest of this entry »

Credit Problem – What do I do?

Jeff at work    Unfortunately, the economic climate in the U.S. is pretty dismal right now. A lot of people are losing their jobs, and their sources of income: the New York Times revealed that in February alone, about 651,000 U.S. jobs disappeared. Unemployment is steadily climbing and many Americans are finding themselves at a loss for options.

What makes the situation worse, for many people, is debt. A lot of people actively use credit cards to build credit and finance stuff they can’t immediately pay for. The credit system has been around for ages, and lately has become more problematic for people with crippled sources of income– like those recently laid off.

People with poor credit have a slew of problems to deal with. Everything that goes wrong with your bills and your credit ends up on your credit report, and every time you apply for a loan, your damaged credit report will be an obstacle.

The best way to combat poor credit is using your credit card Read the rest of this entry »
