City of College Station Fall Activites Part 1

Early in the morning or late in the evening, a cool breeze hits College Station and people are reminded of the beautiful fall weather that is on its way. Although fall technically begins September 22 this year, the College Station City fall activities have already begun. Youth programs, adult programs, senior adult programs, special events and all types of parks are open to the general public.

The city offers many different sports to youth in College Station between the ages of 5 and 18. Kids love to be active, and the best way to teach them a healthy lifestyle is to teach them to love working out! Sports like flag football, volleyball, basketball, and tennis are all offered on different days for kids of all ages. There is even a soccer team for children with special needs. The cost of the program ranges from $15 per child to $105 per child. Practices are a couple times a week and each team will participate in games in the community. If you are interested in coaching one of these sports, you can apply to volunteer at cstx.gov/sportsvolunteer.

There are also youth programs other than sporting events. Kids Klub is available as an after school program for any child enrolled in College Station ISD elementary or intermediate schools. Kids Klub strives to teach children to develop their physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills. If you are interested in enrolling your child in Kids Klub for this school year, you can call the registration office at 979-764-5430 or visit the website at cstx.gov/kidsklub. The schools that participate in Kids Klub are: College Hills, South Knoll, Southwood Valley, Rock Prairie, Pebble Creek, Forest Ridge, Creek View, Greens Prairie, Oakwood and Cypress Grove. On certain holidays, all-day Kids Klub is offered to up to 100 children at a single location, Greens Prairie Elementary. You are asked to register your child for this ahead of time, and the cost is $25 per child per day. The dates that this program is offered are August 17, August 20-24, October 8 and February 18.

The public library in town, Larry J. Ringer Public Library, offers several different activities for youth to participate in. They host a teen and tween pool party for kids ages 9-19 at Adamson Lagoon. Music at the party is provided by Candy 95. On another day, the library partners with the College Station Police Department CSI to teach elementary age children how to investigate crime scenes. The library offers an Animé club for children ages 12-19. The meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month from 3:45-5:30 p.m. The Babies and Books club is held on Mondays at the library for “walkers” at 10 a.m. and “pre-walkers” at 11 a.m. Story Time in the library is on Wednesdays for 2 through 5 year olds. For older children ages 12-19, there is a Teen Book Club on the first Wednesday of each month from 4-5 p.m.

The Southwood Community Center offers an after school program to the city’s youth. The cost is $30 per school year for a resident and $2 per day for a resident. Buses pick up at Oakwood, Cypress Grove and AMCMS for $2.50 per ride or $50 for 25 rides. The Lincoln Recreation Center is also an after school program offered Monday through Friday. This program is part of the Boys & Girls Club for the Brazos Valley, and the cost is $30 for a resident and $20 for a low-income resident.

Youth Xtra is a program that offers extra learning classes to kids of all ages on subjects including dance, business, arts and crafts, language, fitness, music and voice, self-improvement, computers, sports, special interest, life enhancement and more. The cost for the Ballet/Tap for Kids class is $120, Cheerleading is $120, Junior League Gold is $270, Texas Team Junior Gold is $99, and Tae Kwon Do for Kids is $120. For more details on these programs, visit the College Station City Website at cstx.gov/parks.

The adults of College Station have many opportunities they are able to take advantage of this fall as well! Athletic sports are offered to all adults with no residency restrictions. Adult slow-pitch softball, tennis, kickball and volleyball are offered for ages 16+ for varying prices per individual or per team.

Normally when fall hits, people imagine pools closing down, however the city offers a water fitness program that includes 25 exercise sessions. The swim classes provide not only enjoyable exercise but also promote health, strength and flexibility. The class is for ages 12 and up and anyone is invited to join, including adults with arthritis or muscle injuries. The cost for this program is $60.

The local library offers book clubs and other clubs and activities to adults. These include the adult murder mystery club, the beginning puppetry club (which includes a performance), Brazos Valley stitchers, foreign films club, a reading group held on every third Thursday with a book discussion, technology for all club, and a photography contest.

The Lincoln Recreation Center for Adults offers membership for ages 18+ for $75 for a resident or a $2 day pass. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Adult Xtra programs are available for adults in the area. These programs teach extracurricular activities to adults of all ages. Classes in all types of art are offered, including calligraphy, drawing, painting, photography, and pottery. Business classes include the basics of investing, house buyer tips, job interviewing skills, resume 101, selling a house and time management skills. Computer classes teach adults how to navigate and take full advantage of Adobe Photoshop A & B, Computer Security, Microsoft Excel I & II, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word A & B and Web Page Design I & II.
