Crape Myrtle – Crepe Myrtle? Why do we care?

crepe-myrtle.jpgDid you know that the Crape Myrtle (lagerstoemia indica) was the official shrub of Texas? Did you know that Texas is represented by more official plants than any other state? Did you know that the crepe myrtle could have been the state tree and the state flower except it isn’t a native Texan? It originally was imported from China and was introduced to Paris, Texas in 1857 and yes – both spellings are correct. The crape myrtle was declared the Official State Shrub of Texas in 1997.

The crepe myrtle is one of the longest blooming tree. The flowers last from 6-120 days in late summer. They range in height when grown between 18 inches and some even grow as tall as 40 feet. They come in colors ranging from white to pink to purple and are BEAUTIFUL! crepe-myrtle-white250.jpg

They grow wonderfully in the Bryan-College Station community so plant a few and you’ll enjoy beautiful flowers without a lot of work.Susan Hilton
